Sugar Plum Shop

The Sugar Plum Shop - an in-hospital holiday toy store - is just one piece of a magical holiday season at Children's of Alabama.  The Sugar Plum Shop is Children's of Alabama's program for inpatients and their families who spend the holidays at the hospital. Hospital staff, corporate partners and volunteers build a toy store in the Hospital and invite parents to shop-free of charge-for gifts for their patient and their other children in the days leading up to the Christmas holiday. Through the Sugar Plum Shop, Children's hopes to empower parents by providing access to free toys and gifts during the holidays - a time when they may feel especially powerless about the fact that their child is spending time in the hospital.

In 2011, more than 500 children received gifts from the Sugar Plum Shop-more than 200 patients and 300 of their siblings each received five toys, a book, a stuffed animal, stocking stuffers and each family received two board games. Volunteers wrapped the gifts while parents enjoyed a small break from the stress of their child's hospitalization in our Hospitality Suite.

All toys, books, board games and stuffed animals that are distributed to families through the Sugar Plum Shop come from generous donations from the community. For an idea of the types of donations that we ask for, please review our wish list below.
