The Sugar Plum Shop, presented by Regions Bank, is Children's of Alabama's program for patients and their families who must spend the holidays at the hospital. This in-hospital toy store is built and operated by hospital staff, corporate partners and community volunteers who invite parents of currently hospitalized patients to "shop"—free of charge—for gifts for their patient child and siblings.
The Sugar Plum Shop is hosted by Children's Family Services Department which includes Child Life and the Sunshine School. Child Life specialists are specially trained professionals who help children cope with the stress and uncertainty of hospitalization by preparing children for medical procedures, teaching them coping strategies, providing support and distraction, promoting family-centered care and encouraging a sense of fun in spite of challenging circumstances. Our Sunshine School teachers support the unique educational needs of Children's patients while they are hospitalized at home and/or attending school.
Over the years
- More than 500 kids have benefited from the Sugar Plum Shop annually—each receiving at least five gifts in addition to a book, a stuffed animal and a family board game
- More than 500 volunteers supported families at Children's through the Sugar Plum Shop
- Financial support for the Sugar Plum Shop has allowed Children's of Alabama to expand Child Life services to its Emergency Department
All toys, books, board games, stuffed animals and wrapping supplies that are given to families through the Sugar Plum Shop come from generous donations from the community.
All donations should be dropped off Monday through Friday from 6:00am-9:30pm and on holidays and weekends from 8:00am-9:30pm in the Children’s of Alabama lobby at 1600 7th Ave. South in Birmingham.
