Service Opportunities

Service OpportunityEach year Children’s of Alabama has more than 14,000 inpatient visits by children from across Alabama. The average length of an inpatient’s stay is five days. While patients are at Children’s, our dedicated staff works to help them cope with the stress of uncertainty of their hospitalization by providing support and distraction, promoting family-centered care and encouraging a sense of fun in spite of challenging circumstances.

Children’s works with its community supporters, including corporate and community groups, to provide fun treats and activities for patients and their families.

Service Project Ideas
If you or your group is interested in doing something to help patients and families at Children’s of Alabama, here are a few ideas:

  • Host a collection drive: Collect any of the following kinds of items to donate to the patients at Children’s: books, board games, playing cards, infant toys, teen items, arts and crafts supplies, gift cards, costumes, medical play kits, toiletries (other examples can be found on the Children’s of Alabama Wish List)
  • Special Sewing Projects: Sewers can support our patients by making pillowcases and fleece knot blankets
  • Assemble waiting room fun bags: Fill a sealed plastic bag with fun things a child or teen can do as they wait to visit the doctor. Make bags age-specific, but generic enough for boy or a girl. Include things such as: crayons, markers, colored pencils, paper, coloring books, and stickers.
  • Assemble themed bags: Fill a clear bag with activities, toys, or books related to our weekly themes. These bags will be giving to patients who cannot leave their rooms for events. Example: Space Week – Moon Sand, Glow Sticks, Star Wars books or Superhero Week – Capes, Glow Sticks, Superhero Books, Small Superhero Toys. For specific themes and suggestions for bags please contact honey.cook@childrensal.org.
  • Assemble patient pamper kits: Fun filled pamper kits can include NEW fingernail polish, fingernail stickers, lip-gloss/Chap stick, unscented lotion, hairbrush, headband/hair bows, and jewelry.

All donations must be new and in its original box. NO used or gently used items will be accepted. All donations must be dropped off at the 7th Ave Information Desk located in the McWane Building. Click here for specific requirements for all donations and details about how to deliver your service projects to the hospital. Please contact Kelly Baker at kelly.baker@childrensal.org or 205-638-5014 with questions.

Host an activity at Children’s
If you are interested in hosting an activity for patients at Children’s you will be asked to review Children’s of Alabama’s Community Sponsored Activities Policy. All volunteers also will be asked to complete the Visitor Illness Questionnaire prior to volunteering. In addition, all volunteers will be required to have had a flu shot (no mist or spray) prior to coming to Children’s to volunteer.

How it works:

  • Activities generally take place Tuesdays through Fridays.
  • Up to 5 volunteers per activity
  • All volunteers must be at least 16 years old in keeping with Children’s of Alabama’s recently updated volunteer requirements.
  • Activities will take place in the Performance Area or Room of Magic at Children’s of Alabama unless otherwise directed. Groups will not be permitted on patient floors.
  • All activities must be religiously and politically neutral as Children’s of Alabama serves patients from many diverse backgrounds.
  • Activities should not exceed one hour.
  • Children’s of Alabama will provide craft and art supplies for activities unless otherwise directed.
  • Often groups would like to provide care packages or goodie bags for patients when they come for their activity in which case, we ask that groups prepare 200 bags for patients throughout the hospital filled with only pre-approved items.
  • In order to engage as many of their members/employees as possible, some groups may schedule regular activities at Children’s (monthly, quarterly, etc.).

Examples of Activities:

  • BINGO, Karaoke and other interactive games
  • Craft stations based on pre-determined themes like Space Week, Harry Potter Week, Superheroes, LEGOs, etc.
  • Special one-day celebrations like Barbie’s Birthday, Tooth Fairy Day, Play Doh Day, Snoopy’s Birthday, Veteran’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day
